The ESBC is a middling-sized choir, suitable for the performance of the baroque works that form the core of its repertoire. It welcomes new members. Anyone wanting to join the choir should preferably have some experience of choral singing and at least a basic ability to read music. If you are interested in joining, a good way to find out if the choir is suitable for you and you are suitable for the choir is to come along to a rehearsal or to one of the choir's 'Sing and Discover' workshops. If you email the choir's Membership Secretary, she will be able to give you information about forthcoming opportunities to come and sing. The choir's Music Director assesses the voices of potential members in a choral setting.
Please use the Contact Us enquiry if you wish to apply or receive further details.
Rehearsals usually take place on Saturdays from 15:00 to 17:30. Rehearsals take place at the Phoenix Centre, 26 Malling Street, Lewes, BN7 2RD.
There are no more than 6-8 rehearsals for each concert and sometimes fewer. There is, therefore, an expectation that members do further preparation in their own time between rehearsals.
The Choir Librarian usually has scores available for sale at a discount from the retail price. Scores are also available for hire. A small fee is charged to cover the cost of hire. Members are encouraged to have the following frequently used scores:
Messiah G.F. Handel Watkin Shaw edition
European Sacred Music Oxford Choral Classics edited by John Rutter
Carols for Choirs Book 1 (green book) OUP
The Oxford Book of Tudor Anthems OUP
The standard dress for most concerts is smart black.
Women:black shoes, black trousers or long black skirt with black top.
Men:black shoes and socks, black trousers and long-sleeved open necked black shirt.
Black music folders are used by all choir members at all concerts.
The annual subscription for all members is currently £150.
